IEEE CertifAIEd
IEEE's AI ethics certification programme — product certification mark and professional certification for accountability, transparency, privacy, and algorithmic bias. City of Vienna was first to earn the mark.
What it does
IEEE Standards Association's certification programme for ethical AI, covering two tracks: product certification (the CertifAIEd Mark demonstrating that an AI product/service meets IEEE ethical criteria) and professional certification (a 3-year credential for individuals trained in the CertifAIEd methodology). Built around four pillars: accountability, transparency, privacy, and algorithmic bias. Developed by an interdisciplinary group of AI ethics experts and aligned with global regulations including the EU AI Act. The City of Vienna became the first city worldwide to earn the certification mark, advancing its Digital Humanism strategy. Training offered via self-study, virtual, or in-person formats.
Security relevance
Provides a structured framework for evaluating the ethical dimensions of AI systems — not just whether they're technically secure, but whether they operate with accountability, explainability, and fairness. The product certification acts as a risk mitigation tool, reducing the risk of system or process failures when introducing new AI into established business processes. The professional certification equips individuals with the methodology to identify ethical gaps across the AI lifecycle.
When to use it
Use when you need a globally recognised ethical certification for AI products or when training staff on AI ethics methodology. Particularly valuable for organisations facing EU AI Act compliance requirements or those procuring AI systems that need demonstrable ethical assessment. The professional certification requires at least one year of AI or project management experience.
OWASP coverage
Risks addressed — mapped to both OWASP Top 10 standards. 1 in LLM, 1 in Agentic.
